AS/NZS 1716:2012 — Respiratory Protective Devices

The joint Australian/New Zealand Standard setting performance requirements for respiratory protective devices used during asbestos work.

AS/NZS 1716:2012 sets the performance and construction requirements for respiratory protective devices (RPDs) sold and used in Australia and New Zealand. It is the standard that makes a respirator 'fit for purpose' for hazardous dusts and fibres, including asbestos.

The companion standard AS/NZS 1715 covers selection, use, and maintenance of RPDs — including fit testing, training, and replacement schedules. Together, the two standards underpin the respiratory protection requirements in the asbestos Codes of Practice.

For asbestos work, the type of respirator required depends on the work and the form of asbestos. P2 half-face respirators are typically the minimum for short, low-disturbance work, with full-face or powered air-purifying respirators required for friable asbestos and higher-exposure tasks.

What this means for you: respirators used on site should be marked as compliant with AS/NZS 1716, fitted to the wearer through fit testing, and replaced according to manufacturer guidance. Non-compliant or poorly fitted respirators give a false sense of protection.
