AS 4964-2004 — Method for the Qualitative Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples

The Australian Standard that defines how laboratories identify asbestos in bulk samples using polarised light microscopy.

AS 4964-2004 is the Australian Standard method for qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples. It is the technical basis on which NATA-accredited laboratories report whether a sample contains asbestos and, if so, which type (chrysotile, amosite, or crocidolite).

The method is based on polarised light microscopy combined with dispersion staining. It is qualitative — it answers 'is asbestos present, and what type?' rather than 'how much asbestos is present?'.

Following AS 4964 is what allows a lab result to be relied on for compliance purposes. Identification carried out outside the Standard, or by a non-accredited laboratory, generally cannot be used to clear a material as 'asbestos free'.

What this means for you: when AX4 coordinates sample testing, samples are submitted through laboratory pathways accredited to AS 4964 so the result stands up for property, demolition, refurbishment, and workplace decisions.
